Conference tournaments in swing in NAIA, NCAA D-II, NCAA D-III

Indiana University Southeast (32-18) finished as runner-up to Point Park in the River States Conference baseball tournament at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Three teams remain in the NAIA’s Crossroads League tournament in Winterholter Field in Upland, Ind. — regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Taylor (40-14) takes on the winner of the 3 p.m. Monday, May 6 game between No. 3 Saint Francis (36-16) vs. No. 6 Marian (25-26) at 6 for the title. A second championship game called will be played if necessary in the double-elimination format.

Taylor is coached by Kyle Gould, Saint Francis Dustin Butcher and Marian Todd Bacon.

Indiana Tech (30-22) has made the best-of-three championship series in the NAIA’s Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at Warrior Field in Fort Wayne, Ind. Those games against Madonna are slated for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. today (May 6) and — if necessary — Tuesday (May 7). 

Kip McWilliams’ Indiana Tech team has won nine games in a row. The Warriors began the 2024 season at 0-6 and 2-16.

In NCAA Division II, the Great Lakes Valley Conference is slated for May 8-11 at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Ill.

Regular season champion Indianapolis (34-16) is the No. 1 seed in an eight-team field. The Al Ready-coached Greyhounds play Lewis at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time/7:30 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, May 8.

Purdue Northwest (18-28) is the No. 6 seed in NCAA D-II’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament May 9-12 at Jackson Field in Lansing, Mich.

Dave Griffin’s PNW Pride won its last regular-season game.

NCAA Division III’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference will stage its six-team tournament May 9-12 at Kokomo (Ind.) Municipal Stadium.

Hanover (26-14) is the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 Transylvania, No. 3 Rose-Hulman (23-17), No. 4 Mount St. Joseph, No. 5 Anderson (23-17) and No. 6 Franklin (20-20). 

The Hanover Panthers are coached by Grant Bellak, the Rose-Hulman Fightin’ Engineers Adam Rosen, the Anderson Ravens Matt Bair and the Franklin Grizzlies Lance Marshall.

Four teams made NCAA D-III’s North Coast Athletic Conference — No. 1 seed Wittenberg, No. 2 Denison, No. 3 DePauw (23-15) and No. 4 Kenyon. The event is May 9-11 in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Through the Week of April 29-May 5, the longest win streaks among the state’s NCAA Division I teams belong to Indiana State (34-10) and Southern Indiana (22-26) at three games apiece. 

Mitch Hannahs’ ISU Sycamores are 17-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference and have MVC series left against Evansville and Valparaiso to wrap the regular season plus a mid-week game against Ball State.

Tracy Archuleta’s Screaming Eagles are 11-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference and have OVC series left with Arkansas-Little Rock and Western Illinois plus mid-weeks with Evansville and Middle Tennessee State.

Qualified NAIA teams play this week in conference tournaments.

Regular-season champion Taylor University is the top seed and host of the Crossroads League May 1-6 at Winterholter Field in Upland, Ind. The Kyle Gould-coached Trojans are 37-13 overall and went 30-6 in league play.

Indiana Wesleyan University (33-13, 27-9) is the No. 2 seed, University of Saint Francis (34-15, 24-12) No. 3, Huntington University (29-19, 23-13) No. 4, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (22-24, 18-18) No. 5, Marian University (22-25, 17-19) No. 6, Spring Arbor University (22-26, 16-20) No. 7 and Grace College (18-30, 12-24) No. 8.

The River States Conference is May 2-6 at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Indiana University Southeast (29-17, 20-4) is the No. 2 seed. Indiana University-Kokomo (30-19, 18-6) is No. 4 and Oakland City University (38-14, 17-7) No. 5.

Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference is May 1-7  with host sites the first three days and a best-of-3 championship series May 6-7.

Indiana Tech (27-22, 24-8) is the No. 3 seed and will compete in the Concordia Pod.

The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference is May 4-9 at Duly Health & Care Field in Joliet, Ill.

Indiana University South Bend (18-32, 10-22) is the No. 5 and Calumet College of St. Joseph (21-29, 14-18) No. 8.

At 11 games, NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis has the state’s best winning streak through the Week of April 22-28.

The Al Ready-coached Greyhounds are 32-14 overall and 27-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Taylor Trojans have won their last nine. 

Riding a six-game win streak is Kip McWilliams’ Indiana Tech Warriors.

NCAA Division I Purdue University has strung together four wins, including one April 26 against Northwestern at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Greg Goff’s Boilermakers are 29-15 in all games and 11-4 in the Big Ten Conference.

Ryan Roth’s Grace Lancers have also won four straight. 

Five programs are on three-game win streaks — Thad Frame’s Huntington Foresters, Ian MacDonald’s Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats, Grant Bellak’s NCAA Division III Hanover College Panthers, Adam Rosen’s NCAA D-III Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin’ Engineers and Jeff Mercer’s NCAA D-I Indiana University Hoosiers.

Hanover is 24-11 overall and 15-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

RHIT is 21-14 in all games and 12-6 in the HCAC.

Indiana is 25-18-1 overall and 10-5 in the Big Ten.

The Hoosiers go to Purdue Friday though Sunday, May 3-5.

Indiana State, Hanover own six-game win streaks

The state’s longest college baseball win streaks through the Week of April 8-14 belong to the NCAA Division I Indiana State University Sycamores and NCAA D-III Hanover College Panthers. Both have won six in a row.

Indiana State is 27-7 overall and and 10-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Mitch Hannahs’ team is in first place, three games ahead of Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Belmont and Evansville.

Hanover is 19-8 in all games and 10-2 in the Heartland College Athletic Conference. Grant Bellak’s club is in first, a half game against of Transylvania.

NAIA University of Saint Francis owns a five-game win streak. Dustin Butcher’s Cougars are 27-14 overall and 17-11 in the Crossroads League.

Taylor University (29-13, 22-6) and Indiana Wesleyan University (27-11, 21-7) are 1-2 atop the CL. TU is coached by Kyle Gould and IWU by Ian MacDonald.

Four-game win streaks belong to D-I University of Evansville and NAIA Oakland City University.

Wes Carroll’s UE Purple Aces are 18-17 overall and 7-5 in the MVC.

Andy Lasher’s OCU Mighty Oaks are 32-13 overall and 14-7 in the River States Conference.

Tied for first place in the RSC are Indiana University-Kokomo (29-14, 17-4) and Indiana University Southeast (25-14, 17-4). The Drew Brantley-coached IUK Cougars and Brett Neffendorf-coached IUS Grenadiers just finished a three-game series in Kokomo. IUK won that 2-1.

Current three-game win streaks have been built by D-I’s Ball State University and Purdue University and D-III’s Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Wabash College.

Rich Maloney’s BSU Cardinals and 23-13 overall and 10-8 in the Mid-American Conference — good for fourth place behind Bowling Green (15-0 in MAC games), Western Michigan (11-4) and Toledo (12-6).

Greg Goff’s PU Boilermakers are 23-13 overall and 8-4 in the Big Ten Conference, placing them behind Illinois (7-2 in B1G games) and Nebraska (6-3).

Adam Rosen’s RHIT Fightin’ Engineers are 17-11 overall and 8-4 in the HCAC.

Jake Martin’s Wabash Little Giants is 14-12 overall and 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Denison (7-1 in NCAC games), DePauw (5-1) and Wittenberg (5-1) are at the top.

NAIA’s Indiana University Southeast continued to pile up college baseball victory after victory, extending its win streak to 13 through the Week of April 1-7.

Under the direction of first-year coach Brett Neffendorf, the Grenadiers are 24-12 overall and 16-2 in the River States Conference, which puts IUS in first place.

Another NAIA team from the state has a double-digit win streak and that’s Indiana Tech at 11.

The Kip McWilliams-coached Warriors are 17-17 overall and 14-4 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference — good for third place behind Northwestern Ohio (15-0) and Concordia (15-3).

Other top consecutive triumph runs in NAIA belong to Indiana Wesleyan University (7), Indiana University-Kokomo (6), Taylor University (5) and Huntington University (3).

Ian MacDonald’s IWU Wildcats are 25-9 overall and 19-5 in the Crossroads League.

Drew Brantley IUK Cougars are 27-13 in all games and 15-3 in the RSC, which puts then in second place.

Kyle Gould’s TU Trojans are 27-11 overall and 20-4 in the Crossroads.

Thad Frame’s HU Foresters are 21-14 overall and 16-8 in the CL.

Taylor, Indiana Wesleyan and Huntington are 1-2-3 in the league standings.

NCAA Division I Purdue — coached by Greg Goff — has a four-game win streak. The Boilermakers are 20-12 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten Conference. That’s tied for the third-best record in conference games.

Two teams in the NCAA Division III Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference have won their last three contests.

Grant Bellak’s Hanover College Panthers are 16-8 and 7-2.

Adam Rosen’s Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin’ Engineers are 14-10 and 6-4. 

Hanover is second and Rose-Hulman fourth in the HCAC, which is led by Mount St. Joseph (8-1).

Indianapolis, IU-Kokomo hottest baseball teams in state

NCAA Division II Indianapolis and NAIA Indiana University-Kokomo are both coming off the winter portion of the 2024 college baseball season blazing hot.

At the close of the Week of March 11-17, the Al Ready-coached UIndy Greyhounds (11-7 overall) and Drew Brantley-coached Cougars (18-11) were both on nine-game win streaks.

Indianapolis is off to a 8-0 start in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Easton Good is hitting .400 with four home runs and 28 runs batted in. The Hounds’ next nine scheduled contests are home games.

IUK is 7-2 in the River States Conference and tied atop the West Division with Andy Lasher-coached Oakland City (23-8) and Brett Neffendorf-coached Indiana University Southeast (14-12). 

Jack Leverenz is hitting .388 with two home runs and 14 RBIs for IU-Kokomo.

Oakland City’s Leyton Ivers is hitting .389 with three homers and 17 RBIs.

IU Southeast’s Mason White (Evansville Central Class of 2018) is hitting .444 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs.

OCU is on a three-game victory streak. The Mighty Oaks are to visit IU-Kokomo Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.

Also in NAIA, Kyle Gould-coached Taylor (17-9) has won its last six and Todd Bacon-coached Marian (12-11) its last four.

At 10-2, Taylor and Ian MacDonald-coached Indiana Wesleyan (15-6) are tied for first place in the Crossroads League.

The best current win streak among the state’s NCAA Division III teams belongs to Lance Marshall-coached Franklin (9-4) at four. Tysen Lipscomb (Wapahani Class of 2019) is hitting .442 with four homers and 20 RBIs.

Win leaders among NCAA D-I teams are Greg Goff-coached Purdue (15-6) and Mitch Hannahs-coached Indiana State (14-4).

Through 20 games, Purdue’s Luke Gaffney was hitting .436 with three homers and 24 RBIs.

Indiana State’s Luis Hernandez is hitting .368 with four homers and 19 RBIs.

The first Big Ten Conference series are this weekend (Friday-Sunday) for Purdue (at home vs. Iowa) and Indiana (at home against Illinois).

New head coach Neffendorf making accountability, discipline priority at IU Southeast

Stressing a culture of accountability, discipline and hard work, new Indiana University Southeast head baseball coach Brett Neffendorf is looking to build on Grenadiers tradition.

Neffendorf became the eighth man in charge of the program on July 5, taking over from Ben Reel who led IUS to 548 wins and numerous championships in 15 seasons.

“That’s one of the things that drew me here,” says Neffendorf of the culture already in-place at the New Albany-based NAIA school. 

Fall classes start Aug. 21 and players report a few days before that.

“I’m excited to get going,” says Neffendorf.

An alumni golf outing is planned for Friday, Oct. 6.

“When you have tradition and sustained success that you’ve had at IUS it’s built on the people that have been there,” says Neffendorf. “We want to get alumni involved and connected.

“We want our current guys to understand that and see that.”

Through the efforts Neffendorf and recruiting coordinator Joe Nattermann, the Grenadiers have most players back — close to 25 — from 2023 added to a class of recruits.

“We would take a front-line arm,” says Neffendorf of the incoming class. “Other than that we feel comfortable with where we’re at.”

One thing that puzzles Neffendorf about recruiting i the number of players with a “Division I or Bust” mentality.

“Small-college baseball has Division I players on just about every roster,” says Neffendorf. “Social media and the Transfer Portal has created some of that.”

Not including newcomers, the current 2023-24 online roster of 27 features 13 seniors and eight juniors, including Brayden Hazelwood.

Mason White is also back on the offensive side. 

The ’23 team went 33-20 overall and 20-7 in the River States Conference. The team posted a .308 batting average and a .898 OPS (.403 on-base percentage plus .495 slugging average) with 56 home runs.

IUS went 18-1 in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season then 50-16 in 2021 and 41-15 in 2022.

Besides Natterman, the coaching staff currently features volunteers Glendon Rusch (former big league pitcher) and Gregg Oppel and a full-time assistant is to be hired.

Cade Rusch is a sophomore right-handed pitcher for the Grenadiers.

Neffendorf comes to IUS after serving as an assistant coach at Union College in Barboursville, Ky. He has also served as a head coach at Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., and assistant at Campbellsville (Ky.) University, Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn., and Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore., and George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.

He has been an associate scout for the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves. Before Campbellsville, he directed the Winter Prospect Camp at Oregon State, working closely with associate head coach Pat Bailey.

Coaching is a family thing with the Neffendorfs.

Grandfather Harvey Neffendorf was a high school football and baseball coach in Oregon.

Father Mark Neffendorf was a long-time basketball coach and school administrator in that state. He played quarterback at Portland State and then football and baseball at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. 

Older brother Brad Neffendorf is head baseball coach at Louisiana State University Shreveport. He formerly was recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at Campbellsville for Tigers head coach Beauford Sanders.

Brett Neffendorf, a Beaverton, Ore., native, earned a Sociology degree at Oregon State University and a Master of Management and Leadership degree at Campbellsville.

Since 2019, Brett has been married to the former Jana Kortas, an All-American volleyball player and assistant coach at Campbellsville. She went to Christian Academy in Louisville.

Her father — the late Ken Kortas — played football at the University of Louisville and was a defensive tackle in the National Football League for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears.

Athleticism helps Indiana Southeast’s Hazelwood around the diamond

Brayden Hazelwood has used his adaptability and athleticism to effectively play multiple positions on the baseball field.

He was recruited from Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis to Indiana University Southeast as a shortstop. With talented Daunte DeCello (who played at the University of Toledo in 2023) at that spot, Hazelwood served the Grenadiers at other places on the diamond.

In the spring at IUS, he was mostly in the outfield with some time at first base.

This summer with the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s Southern Ohio Copperheads (playing home games at Ohio University’s Bob Wren Stadium), Hazelwood has been a shortstop and lead-off hitter. He was a shortstop for the Park Rangers in the College Summer League at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., in 2021 and the Northwoods League’s Green Bay (Wis.) Rockers in the summer of 2022.

“I’m just a versatile athlete,” says Hazelwood, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder. “Wherever the team needs me is where I’ll be able to play. Shortstop feels like home.

“I use my athleticism (in the field). I’m quick twitch. I have speed. I can cover some ground. I try not to get beat over my head. I trust my glove. I trust my arm.”

Hazelwood’s favorite player is Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter.

“Not just the way he played the game but the way that he carried himself on and off the field,” says Hazelwood. “I really liked him as a role model growing up.”

In 2023, Hazelwood played in 51 games (45 starts) for IUS, missing a few midseason games with a wrist injury. Swinging from the right side of the plate, he hit .294 (45-of-153) with seven home runs, one triple, 10 doubles, 32 runs batted in, 36 runs scored and four stolen bases.

In 98 career games (2021-23), Hazelwood is hitting .301 (58-of-193) with seven homers, two triples, 14 doubles, 46 RBIs, 65 runs and 12 steals. 

In that span, the Grenadiers are 123-51 overall and 66-12 in the River States Conference. IUS went to the College World Series in 2021.

Hazelwood, who has one remaining year of eligibility, describes his power as gap-to-gap.

“I like to get on base, steal some bases, make pitchers work and hit for average,” says Hazelwood. “Doubles and home runs come from hitting mistakes.”

Hazelwood, who turns 21 in July, has one remaining year of eligibility in 2023-24 and it will come with an new head coach. Ben Reel stepped down as Grenadiers field boss after 15 seasons.

“It was amazing,” says Hazelwood of his time playing for Reel. “He taught me so many lessons on the field and off the field. He’s a great guy. Baseball-wise, he’s the one you want in your corner. I’d have to say the same thing life-wise.”

Hazelwood, a Criminal Justice major with a Psychology minor, and other returning players are meeting this week with the three finalists for head coach post. They get to ask questions and give their input in the process as IU Southeast gets a whole new coaching staff.

Born in Indianapolis and raised on the south side of Indy, Hazelwood got his formal baseball start at what is now Decatur Central Little League. He spent two travel ball stints with the Indiana Nitro and also represented the Indiana Baseball Academy Storm and Jeff Stout-coached Indiana Twins.

At Decatur Central High, Hazelwood saw some varsity time as a freshman and sophomore and played there full-time as a junior. The COVID-19 pandemic took away his senior season in 2020.

His head coach the first three years was Jason Combs. Sean Winkelseth followed.

Louisville native Nate Hazelwood runs his own recruitment consulting business. Decatur Central alum Kara Hazelwood is an instructional coach for Indianapolis Public Schools.

Brayden is the oldest of Nate and Kara’s four children. All are athletes. Sydney Hazelwood (Decatur Central Class of 2024) is in softball, Landyn Hazelwood (Decatur Central Class of 2026) is in football and track and Jordyn Hazelwood (Decatur Middle School eighth grader in 2023-24) is in volleyball, track and softball.

Lasher-led Oakland City Mighty Oaks posted 65 wins over last two seasons

Oakland City (Ind.) University won more baseball games in 2023 than in 2022 and that team set the single-season school record.
The power blue-clad Mighty Oaks got off to an 8-0 start, mixed in another seven-game win streak and went 34-24 this spring after posting a mark of 31-23.
“We did a really good job of the mound all year,” says third-year OCU head coach Andy Lasher. “We threw a lot of strikes.”
The staff was bolstered by sophomore right-handers Gehrig Tenhumberg, Christian Burgrabe, Ben Simmons, Hunter Callahan, Owen Spears, Milan van der Breggen and freshman lefty Evan Price.
Tenhumberg (Evansville Reitz Class of 2019) made 16 mound appearances (14 starts) and went 7-3 with 4.54 earned run average, 68 strikeouts and 18 walks, 83 1/3 innings.
Burgrabe (Marion, Ill.) made 18 appearances (11 starts) and was 5-5 with one save, a 4.50 ERA, 36 strikeouts and nine walks in 64 innings.
Simmons (Evansville Harrison Class of 2021) was in 15 games (all starts) and went 4-8 with a 4.72, 56 strikeouts and 26 walks in 74 1/3 innings.
Callahan (Cisne, Ill.) made 16 appearances (10 in relief) and went 4-1 with a 3.58 ERA, 37 strikeouts and 18 walks in 37 2/3 innings.
Spears (North Posey Class of 2021) was in 20 contests (17 in relief) and went 4-0 with a 3.91 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 14 walks in 48 1/3 innings.
van der Breggen (Netherlands) made 13 appearances (all in relief) and went 3-0 with a 5.40, 10 strikeouts and three walks in 25 innings.
Price (Rossville Class of 2021) was in 17 games (all in relief) and went 3-0 with five saves, a 3.00 ERA, 24 K’s and seven free passes in 21 innings.
“We had an entirely new infield from last year,” says Lasher, who had senior Jared Kirkman at third base, sophomore Xander Willis at shortstop, junior Sam Pinckert at second base and senior Treven Madden at first base in 2023. “There was new faces. We were athletic. We were able to score runs without having to hit the ball over the wall every inning.”
The Mighty Oaks stole 100 bases in 117 attempts.
“We had some guys step up and play really well for us down the stretch,” says Lasher, whose club qualified for the River States Conference tournament and then turned attention to the National Christian College Athletic Association tourney.
Oakland City went 3-1 in winning the NCCAA Mideast Regional in Wilmore, Ky. The ’23 season came to a close Monday, May 22 at the NCCAA World Series in Kansas City, Mo.
Pinckert (Heritage Hills Class of 2018) hit .337 (70-of-208) with seven home runs, 38 runs batted in and 12 stolen bases.
Freshman right fielder Garrett Causey (Evansville Central Class of 2021) posted marks of .309-5-37 with 36 runs.
Junior left fielder Noah Baugher (Louisville, Ky.) went .302-1-33 with seven triples, 35 runs and 15 steals.
Senior outfielder Victor Alvarez (Venezuela) chipped in .302-1-13 with 21 runs and 15 steals.
Willis (Mt. Carmel, Ill.) produced a .289-7-45 line with 44 runs and 18 steals.
Junior center fielder and lead-off man Aron Busick (Paoli Class of 2020) went .285-2-19 with 39 runs and 10 steals.
Kirkman (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed .272-0-17 with 24 runs.
Freshman catcher Oliver Hamilton (Gibson Southern Class of 2022) hit .265-2-18.
Madden (Vincennes Lincoln Class of 2017) added .260-4-26 with 30 runs.
Junior designated hitter/first baseman Conner Oxley (Southridge Class of 2020) tossed .214-2-28 with 26 runs into the offensive mix.
There were a number of transfers on the 2023 Mighty Oaks.
“We had to get them from anywhere and everywhere,” says Lasher. “It’s hard to win right away when you’re only freshmen though we have some younger guys who do play.”
Alvarez came from Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill., and van der Breggen from Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa.
A private school with less than 1,000 students, OCU’s recruiting base is generally southern Indiana, southern Illinois and western Kentucky.
A 2009 graduate of Castle High School (Newburgh, Ind.) who played at Olney (Ill.) Central College and the University of Evansville, Lasher was an assistant at Olney Central, Eastern Illinois University and the University of Southern Indiana (Evansville) as well as manager of the summer wood-bat Dubois County Bombers at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind., before taking over at Oakland City.
Lasher, 32, took over the program in April 2020 as T-Ray Fletcher ended his 26-year run as head coach and became athletic director and the team went from NCAA D-II to NAIA.
The 2020 season was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic and that contributed to Lasher inheriting a roster of 18 players.
True seniors Kirkman and Madden have used up their eligibility, but most of the teams is expected back in 2023-24.
With renovations to Oakland City’s baseball stadium (formerly Pinnick Field), the Mighty Oaks played and practiced most of this spring at League Stadium, working around the needs of the Gene Mattingly-coached Southridge Raiders.
Groundbreaking for Mathew and Lindsey Konkler Stadium took place in November 2022. When completed, the facility will have turf infield with dugouts, backstop, press box, lights, scoreboard and outfield fence.
“We should be able to practice on it in the fall,” says Lasher.
His 2023 coaching staff included second-year assistants Joey Drury, Jack Murphy and first-time coach Ben Wilcoxson.
Drury (Center Grove Class of 2016) played for Lasher at Olney Central and then Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich.).
Murphy is from the Chicago area and played at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and was an assistant at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., before coming to Oakland City.
Lexington, Ky., native Wilcoxson played at Kentucky Wesleyan University in Owensboro, Ky., and for Lasher’s Bombers. He was with OCU from August to May before going to play in the United Shore Professional Baseball League in Utica, Mich.

Postseason heating up at NAIA, NCAA D-II, NCAA D-III, NJCAA levels

NAIA conference tournaments are winding down as the calendar turns to the second week of May.
Going into the finals today (May 8) at Huntington, the Crossroads League has three teams left — Indiana Wesleyan, Huntington and Saint Francis.
Regular-season champion Taylor lost both its CL tournament games. The Trojans now turn their attention to hosting an NAIA Opening Round site May 15-18.
Indiana University South Bend made it to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship slated later today (May 8) in Joliet, Ill.
Indiana University Southeast lost in the championship of the River States Conference.
RSC member Oakland City bowed out in the tournament and will now play in the National Christian College Athletic Association Mideast Regional May 9-11 as Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky.
Indiana Tech lost in the championship round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at Ann Arbor, Mich.
The 2023 season has concluded for NAIA schools Bethel, Calumet St. Joseph, Goshen, Grace, IU-Kokomo, IUPU-Columbus and Marian.
NCAA Division II Indianapolis is the No. 5 seed in the eight-team Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament May 11-14 in Marion, Ill.
NCAA D-II Purdue Northwest is the No. 5 seed in the six-team Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference tournament May 11-14 in Lansing, Mich.
At the NCAA D-III level, tournaments for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and North Coast Athletic Conference will include Indiana-based teams.
The six-team HCAC tournament is May 11-14 at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Regular-season champion Franklin is the No. 1 seed. Rose-Hulman is No. 4, Anderson No. 5 and Manchester No. 6. Earlham and Hanover did not make the postseason.
The top four teams made the NCAC tourney field May 11-12 and 14 at Chillicothe, Ohio. Among those is No. 4 seed Wabash. DePauw did not make the tournament.
Trine did not qualify in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
In what is likely the program’s final season, Ivy Tech Northeast won the Ohio Community College Athletic Association Region/Sub-District and qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Great Lakes Region 12 May 11-12 at Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College.
In other NJCAA news, Vincennes sophomore Colin Long became the Trailblazers’ career hits leader. The Evansville (Ind.) Reitz High School graduate surpassed Jeffrey Hanna (1989) with 163 and now has 167.

The state’s longest current win streaks belong to Indiana State (6), Anderson (3), Franklin (3), Indiana (3), Indianapolis (3), Ivy Tech Northeast (3) and Rose-Hulman (3).

The NCAA Division I RPI (Rating Percentage Index) rankings through May 7 has Kentucky as the overall No. 1.
Among the state’s schools, Indiana State is No. 9, Indiana No. 34, Notre Dame No. 43, Evansville No. 72, Ball State No. 102, Valparaiso No. 107, Purdue No. 196, Butler No. 232, Purdue Fort Wayne No. 278 and Southern Indiana No. 287.
There are two more weekends left in the D-I regular season.

Bickel leads IUPUC Crimson Pride into first baseball season

Athletic history is being made in Columbus, Ind.
Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus has been approved for NAIA status in 2022-23.
The Crimson Pride are up and running with three programs — baseball, softball and cross country — and more sports are planned.
The first official baseball practice was held Tuesday, Sept. 6 on the youth diamonds at CERA Sports Park & Campground in Columbus.
“The City of Columbus as a whole never had collegiate sports,” says Scott Bickel, IUPUC’s first head baseball coach. “We need Columbus and their business partners to support us for us to continue to grow.”
IUPUC is a sister school to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and offers Indiana and Purdue degrees at in-state tuition rates.
An independent pilot program that will not be eligible for NAIA postseason play in the first year, the IUPUC Crimson Pride hopes to get into an athletic conference — preferably the River States Conference (which includes national power Indiana University Southeast plus Indiana University-Kokomo and Oakland City University).
The baseball roster currently numbers 44 and the goal is 55 in order to have full varsity and junior varsity schedules.
“We want to give them an opportunity to compete for a position,” says Bickel. “We’re going to need to play at a highly-respected level to compete for conference championships.
“The main thing we have to do now is install everything. Everything is new to everybody.”
Former pitcher/outfielder Bickel was Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association North-South All-Star Series participant for Huntington North in 2006 and earned IHSBCA all-state honorable mention in both 2005 and 2006.
Among Bickel’s classmates and teammates were Chris Kramer, Andrew Drummond and Jarod Hammel. Kramer went on to play basketball at Purdue University and in the pro ranks. Drummond set offensive records at Huntington (Ind.) University. Hammel also played at HU and is in his second stint as Huntington North head baseball coach.
Bickel played two years each at Huntington North for Chad Daugherty and Russ Degitz (Chad’s younger brother Kyle Daugherty was an assistant) and Greg Roberts at the University of Saint Francis, an NAIA school in Fort Wayne.
Bickel is a first-time head coach with coaching experience as Roberts’ hitting coach for one season at Saint Francis (2016-17) and four campaigns at Ivy Tech Community College Northeast in Fort Wayne (2019-22) doing a number of things for head coaches Lance Hershberger and Connor Wilkins.
Others Ivy Tech coaches include Javier DeJesus (who gave pitching lessons to high schooler Bickel), Mark Flueckiger, Drew Buffenbarger, Benny Clark, Tony Gorgai, Jeff Griffith, Densil Brumfield and Seth Sorenson.
“I have Lance Hershberger to thank for taking a chance with me and offering me an opportunity to network with a great baseball town,” says Bickel. “I really grew my knowledge base from our relationships, and I wouldn’t be here without them.”
In some way or other, Bickel says he has also been impacted by Brent Alwine (Indiana Tech and Indiana Summer Collegiate League)
Matt Brumbaugh (Fort Wayne Northrop), Patrick Collins-Bride (Indiana Tech), Mark Delagarza (Summit City Sluggers), Steve Devine (Indiana Tech), Rich Dunno (Ground Force Sports), Jason Garrett (Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger), Zach Huttie (Indiana Tech/World Baseball Academy), Rick Davis (Strike Zone Training Center), Manny Lopez (The Diamond/Fort Wayne Diamondbacks), Kip McWilliams (Indiana Tech) and Mike Nutter (Fort Wayne TinCaps).
The 2017-18 Ivy Tech team — aka “The Dirty Dozen” for the 12 players left at season’s end — went 25-18 in that inaugural season. Bickel came along in 2018-19 and saw those players move on to four-year schools.
In 2017-18, Bickel was an assistant at Fort Wayne Snider High School. Marc Skelton and Bruce Meyer led the Panthers varsity and assistants included Tim McCrady and Josh Clinkenbeard (who is now Snider head coach).
The last two years, Bickel was a player-coach for the Richard Brown-owned Jackers, which qualified for the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series in both seasons.
While living in Colorado. Bickel met future wife Allie (the couple celebrates six years of marriage Oct. 15), started a business and played baseball.
Bickel holds degrees in Secondary Education for Mathematics and Mild Intervention from Saint Francis (2011) and a Masters of Athletic Administration and Coaching from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. (2021).
The IUPUC staff also includes pitching coach Zach McClellan (who is also the school’s Director of Athletics and a former big league pitcher), Mac Kido and Tyler Dunbar and is likely to expand.
Kido, a 2016 graduate of Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Ind., briefly attended Manchester University in North Manchester, Ind., and has coached at Edgewood and travel ball at the Tier Ten Sports Campus in Spencer, Ind. He will coach Crimson Pride hitters.
Dunbar, a 2019 graduate of North Daviess High School in Elnora, Ind., played briefly at Hanover (Ind.) College and transferred to IUPUC to finish his degree in Elementary Education. He has coached travel ball for Demand Command. He will serve infield coach/assistant baserunning coach for the Crimson Pride.
“I’ll be mentoring and shepherding Coach Kido and Coach Dunbar the best I can,” says Bickel. “That’s a big goal for me.
“I want to give them the autonomy they need to be successful.”
Bickel will work with catchers and outfielders.
An exhibition game with Ivy Tech Northeast is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8 at Fort Wayne’s Shoaff Park.
IUPUC is to open its 2023 season and play its first-ever games Feb. 10-11 against Huntington University in Tuscaloosa, Ala. New Foresters head coach Thad Frame is a 2004 Huntington North graduate, which means he was a Vikings senior when Bickel was a sophomore.
